Rafic Baha El Deen Al-Hariri was a prominent business tycoon and a former Prime Minister of Lebanon. Hariri was born in a modest family in the Southern Lebanese city of Sidon. Hariri attended elementary and secondary school in his city and pursued his business administration studies at the Beirut Arab University. His rise to wealth came when he went in business with the French construction firm Oger for the construction of a hotel in Ta’if, Saudi Arabia, which brought him in good graces with King Khaled. Hariri took over Oger, forming Oger International, which became the main construction firm used by the Saudi Royal family for all of their important developments. As a result, only a few years after his first contract with King Khaled, Hariri had become a multi-billionaire. Mr. Hariri dominated the country's post-war political and business life and is widely credited with reconstructing Beirut after the 15-year civil war. Nevertheless, Mr. Hariri’s proudest achievement was the Hariri Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission to make education a means for the development of the youth of Lebanon. He founded the Hariri Foundation in 1979 and since then, it has helped educate more than 33,000 Lebanese students in the best universities in Lebanon, the US, the UK, France, and Canada. With offices all over Lebanon, the Foundation has been granting loans to those students, regardless of their religious affiliation. Likewise, it opened offices in Paris, London, and Washington, D.C, to keep in close contact with its student protégés who had joined around a hundred universities in Western Europe, North Africa, Canada and the US. In line with its educational and social aims, Hariri Foundation supported a number of universities in Lebanon in different ways, and adopted a few schools which suffered a lot during the war and were about to close. In addition, he helped establish other institutions that have become academically distinguished. The Foundation also provides health, social and cultural services to the needy in Lebanon as well as promotes cultural issues and children welfare. The Hariri Foundation is a testimony to the importance that he gives to education and future generations.
